- The main differences and similarities between art and press photography
Art photography and press photography are all used to describe a moment that the professional photographer want to tell and transfer the information to audience in a visual way. In my opinion, press photography is usually taken by photojournalist to tell a true story or fact to audience. They usually work for newspaper, magazine or other methods of media. Art photography also carries many stories or feelings of photographer. However, those photographers who create the art photography usually use creative method to hide this stories and feelings deep inside the art sometime, people have to study and think more deeper to find out the reason why the art photography is created in the specific way. In addition, I believe that the main difference between art and press photograph is that art photography can be edited to improve what the photographer want. They can use some technological methods to edit and alter the photo, such as making the background more darker to express how sad of his feeling at that moment. However, press photography is more focus on the reality of the fact and stories.
- Is it ethical and acceptable to alter art photographs? Why? Why not?
I do think it is ethical and acceptable to alter art photography. Art photographer can create a fake world which does not to be reality or obey the normal principle of human being through art photography. Audiences have to think and study more deeper to figure out the world described by the photographer. Therefore, art photography can be altered or edited by photographer to extend and improve the creative vision.
- Is it ethical and acceptable to alter press photographs? Why? Why not?
As I explained above, I do not believe that it is ethical and acceptable to alter press photographs. “In a case of photography, usually the audience accepts the photographs as they are, without analyzing what the role of the photographer was and what happened in the post-production process of digital editing of t he images. ” (Capturing my moment) Unlike reading word document, audiences usually do not think and analyze more deeper about the photographer, they will accept whatever the photograph looks like. Generally, press photograph is used to express the true fact, if photographer alters the photo in anyways will lead the misunderstand and affect audiences to believe that they see. In the week 10 note, Mr Kertesz has said that “the camera for him is a little note book, a sketchbook, connected with his life, not obsessed with following news events.” (Capturing the moment) In addition, according to the National Press Photographers Association “Do not manipulate images or add or alter sound in any way that can mislead viewers or misrepresent subjects.” (NPPA) Therefore, press photograph should support true story or events and capture what really happened base on the reality world without any edits and alters.
